X-Ray Girl | Ability to see through people

Russian X-ray girl thrills Japanese scientists with her remarkable gift!

British and Japanese scientists acknowledged that the girl possesses an astounding ability to see through people.

A 17-year-old Russian girl, Natasha Demkina, from the city of Saransk, Russia has become known for her astounding X-ray ability to see people through and diagnose diseases. Scientists became interested in the Russian girl's phenomenon: Natasha Demkina was invited to come to London and New York for scientific experiments. British researchers unanimously acknowledged Natasha's remarkable gift, whereas American scientists hesitated to come to such a conclusion. They did not like that fact that the girl successfully diagnosed diseases with only four patients out of seven. Natasha Demkina has recently passed a similar test in Tokyo, where Japanese scientists confirmed the gift of the Russian X-ray girl.

”It takes me too much time to explain and specify everything that I can see. Sometimes I can see diseases at their early stages, when neither patients nor their doctors have any slightest suspicions about them. That is why we had problems with American scientists,” Natasha says.

During the test in Japan, Natasha was able to see that one of the patients had a prosthetic knee. Another patient had asymmetrically placed internal organs. Natasha easily diagnosed early stages of pregnancy and even a pathology of the fetus with a female patient. She diagnosed a rare undulating spinal curvature with a male patient. When Japanese doctors compared Natasha's drawing of the curvature with the X-ray photograph, they could see that the photo and the drawing were absolutely identical. When Natasha was finished with her seven patients, Japanese doctors could not help bursting into applause. However, it was only the first stage of the trial.

Natasha Demkina was offered to diagnose the disease of an old rottweiler. The girl was afraid to approach the unmuzzled animal, but the doctor told her that she had to look at the dog's paws. Five minutes later the girl pointed at the animal's right back leg, in which she saw a prosthetic device.

The Japanese scientists did not believe the girl, when she told them that she could also see diseases on people's photographs. When she was presented a small, passport-sized photo of a person, she quickly diagnosed liver cancer with the person on the picture

A Story With A Moral: Why Should I Marry You?

Once there was a very handsome, pious, well educated young man, whose parents emphasised for him to get married. They had seen so many marriage proposals, and he had turned them all down. The parents thought it was becoming a little ridiculous or suspected that he may have someone else in mind. However every time the parents left the girls house, the young man would always say she’s not the one! The young man only wanted a girl who was religious and practising, however one evening his mother arranged for him, to meet a girl, who was religious, and practising. On that evening, the young men, and the girl, were left to talk, and ask each other question. (As one would expect).

The young man, being a gentleman that he was allowed, the lady to ask first. The young girl asked the young man so many questions, she asked about his life, his education, his friends, his family, his habits, his hobbies, his lifestyle, his enjoyment, his pastime, his experiences, his shoe size, etc. The young man replied to all of her questions, without tiring, and politely, with a smile the young girl took up nearly all of the time, over an hour, and felt bad, and asked the young man do you have any questions? The young man said, “Its ok. I only have 3 questions.” The young girl thought, “Wow, ONLY 3 questions okay.”

The young man’s 1st question was,

Q1: “Who do you love the most in the world, someone whose love nothing would ever overcome?”

A1: She said; “this is an easy question, my mother.” he smiled

Q2: “you said that you read a lot of Qur’an, could you tell me which surahs you know the meaning of?”

A2: Hearing this she went red and embarrassed and said: “I do not know the meaning of any yet, but I am hoping to soon Insha’Allah I’ve just been a bit busy.”

Q3: “I have been approached for my hand in marriage, by girls that are a lot prettier than you why should I marry you?”

A3: Hearing this young girl was outraged, she stormed off to her parents with fury, and said “I do not want to marry this man he is insulting my beauty, and intelligence.”

The young man and his parents were once again, left without an agreement of marriage. This time, the young man’s parents were really angry, and said “what did you do to anger that girl, the family were so nice, and pleasant, and they were religious like you wanted. What did you ask the girl?? Tell us!” The young man said, “1st I asked her, who do you love the most? She said her mother.” the parents said: “so, what is wrong with that?” The young man said: “no one, is Muslim, until he loves Allah, and his Messenger (SAW) more than anyone else in the world’. If a woman loves Allah and Rasulullah (SAW) more than anyone, she will love me and respect me, and stay faithful to me, because of that love, and fear for Allah. And we can share this love, because this love is greater than lust for beauty.”

The young man said: “the 2nd question I asked, you read a lot of Qur’an, can you tell me the meaning of any surah?” And she said no, because I haven’t had time yet. so I thought of that hadith ‘ALL humans, are dead except for those who have knowledge’ She has lived 20 years and not found ANY time, to seek knowledge, why would I marry a woman, who does not know her rights, and responsibilities, and what will she teach my children, except how to be negligent, because the woman IS the madressa (school) and the best of teachers. And a woman, who has no time for Allah, will not have time for her husband.”

“The 3rd question I asked her was that a lot of girls, prettier than her, had approached me for marriage, why should I choose you? That is why she stormed off, getting angry.” The young man’s parents said: “that is a horrible thing to say, why you would do such a thing? we are going back there to apologies.” The young man said: “I said this on purpose, to test whether she could control her anger. Rasulullah (SAW) said ‘do not get angry, do not get angry, do not get angry’ when asked how to become pious; because anger is from Shaytaan. If a woman cannot control her anger with a stranger she has just met, do you think she will be able to control it with her husband?”

The Moral:

• Knowledge, not only out looking- Beauty.

• Practice, not preaching/recitation only (millions of reciters are there). •

Forgiveness, not Anger.

• Spiritual love, not Lust.

• Compromise!

One should look for a person who:

• Has love for Allah and Rasulullah (SAW).

• Has knowledge of the deen, and can act upon it.

• Can control their anger

• Willing to compromise.

It goes both ways, WOMEN SEEKING A MAN, SHOULD LOOK FOR THE SAME THINGS.

Ayesha (RA) reports: “one day I was on a camel which was somewhat difficult to control and the Rasulullah (SAW) remarked “you must be compassionate, whenever there is compassion in something it adorns it, and when it is removed from something it disgraces it.”

What are the 5 most influential statistics papers of 2000-2010?

What are the 5 most influential statistics papers of 2000-2010?

A few folks here at Hopkins were just reading the comments of our post on  awesome young/senior statisticians. It was cool to see the diversity of opinions and all the impressive people working in our field. We realized that another question we didn't have a great answer to was:
What are the 5 most influential statistics papers of the aughts (2000-2010)?
Now that the auggies or aughts or whatever are a few years behind us, we have the benefit of a little hindsight and can get a reasonable measure of retrospective impact.
Since this is a pretty broad question I'd thought I'd lay down some generic ground rules for nominations:
  1. Papers must have been published in 2000-2010.
  2. Papers must primarily report a statistical method or analysis (the impact shouldn't be only because of the scientific result).
  3. Papers may be published in either statistical or applied journals.
For extra credit, along with your list give your definition of impact. Mine would be something like:
  • Has been cited at a high rate in scientific papers (in other words, it is used by science, not just cited by statisticians trying to beat it)
  • Has corresponding software that has been used
  • Made simpler/changed the way we did a specific type of analysis
I don't have my list yet (I know, a cop-out) but I'm working on it.

Mole Lizard

The Mexican Mole Lizard or Baja Worm Lizard is technically neither lizard nor snake, but an Amphisbaenian. These strange, burrowing reptiles commonly lack limbs or even eyes, spending their entire lives underground where they hunt worms and insects. B. biporus is unusual among the group for having a very prominent pair of clawed, mole-like front legs…though it still has no hind limbs at all.

First Muslim student regent at University of California

First Muslim student regent at University of California

Over the objections of Jewish organisations, the University of California regents on Wednesday selected a new student regent whose advocacy for divesting from Israel, and her outspokenness against “Islamophobia”, has placed her in the centre of one of the most divisive issues in campus politics: Israeli-Palestinian relations.

Sadia Saifuddin of UC Berkeley will become the first Muslim to serve as “student regent designate” — for 2014-15 — after receiving unanimous support from the regents who voted.

Regent Dick Blum abstained, saying, “If you’re going to be the student representative, you have to represent all students. You don’t want to alienate them. ... So I’ve got a problem with this.” But many others at the regents’ meeting in San Francisco — including Jews — spoke in favour of appointing Ms. Saifuddin. She embodies “open-mindedness and tolerance”, said Jonathan Stein, a Cal law student who served on the selection committee. A social welfare major and member of student government, Ms. Saifuddin will serve as a nonvoting regent for one year before becoming a voting member in the next year, succeeding Cinthia Flores, a law student from UC Irvine.

To those who spoke on her behalf, Ms. Saifuddin is not only a brilliant student and kind mentor, she is an advocate for tolerance and inclusion of all students.

But to representatives of anti-defamation groups who addressed the regents and sent e-mails opposing the appointment, Ms. Saifuddin’s actions have fomented a “toxic and hostile” environment for Jewish students.

At the lunch break, she faced reporters. “I hope my leadership is seen in a wider perspective,” she said, noting that her divestment activities had been on behalf of a campus advocacy group called the Middle Eastern Muslim South Asian Coalition.

“I think the position on divestment is irrelevant. It may be my personal opinion, but that has nothing to do with my work as a student regent.”

Her main goals on the board will be improving student access to financial aid and making campuses more tolerable for all students, she said.
